5th DMF is to take place in Kharkiv on September 5-6, 2019.
Political discussion are provoke the biggest emotional response of the audience and involve the majority of participants on the eve of elections.
Mass media which sometimes highlight events in a biased and slanted way play an important role in this process. Election campaigns test journalists’ honesty, decency and professionalism.
The main task of media is to stimulate a public discussion grounded on checked facts and not to sympathise with some political forces openly.
Mass media policy in war-torn regions needs special attention.
There are not many really independent editorial houses there which are able to provide the audience with unbiased information. The level of trust into Ukrainian media is critically low in the Donbas this situation. People of the East of Ukraine are under the cross-fire of Ukrainian politicians’ informational attacks and Russian media propaganda. People do not know who to believe are the situation is aggravated by the influence of separatists’ and pseudo-Ukrainian mass media or influencers controlled by the Kremlin.
Modern technologies enable journalists to manipulate collective consciousness in the interest of certain persons. The invisible war whose main weapon is words is already in progress and its chief aim is to form definite thoughts and guide people’s behaviour.
Press services of political parties often become centers of influence on the collective consciousness. In 2019, politicians use the strained economic situation, accentuating difficulties existing in society, and they are especially active in their promises to eliminate all problems and improve Ukrainians’ life immediately after assuming office. A modern politician must not only be a professional, he or she should be able to persuade colleagues and society that their actions are right otherwise any positive change will be either ignored or shown in negative light.
Political life in modern Ukraine is distorted by different parties manipulative scenarios which form the public mood. Each citizen is responsible for the future of the country thus, we should attract attention of the audience and our colleagues journalists to the ability to disclose sheer informational manipulation.
Today, mass media and social networks have turned into a powerful force which can create for the majority of people a certain vision of the events happening in the country and form political preferences.
Media is de-facto a power as well therefore journalists should realise that highlighting events in a biased way, distortion of facts, imposing ideas and other kinds of manipulation can lead to fatal consequences.
Mass media, the Internet, social networks are the main sources of information for average citizens. The chief condition for creating unbiased informational space are observing the code and standards of journalism ethics as not all Ukrainian can use mass media and the majority of people believe any piece of news they see, hear or read about. Distorting political information during the election campaign is a very dangerous phenomenon which can become fatal for Ukrainian sovereignty.
In 2019, we face lack of true information about political figures, their real motivation and, as a result, voters’ failure to motivate their choice rationally. These elections remond a lottery, political game or a show which often leads to irrational choice. Journalists should stick to the code of professional ethics and standards to remain neutral and unbiased.
This is possible via conducting DMF, and cooperation and exchanging experience with our colleagues from the European Union. Objectives of this year’s DMF: To decrease the level of manipulative scenarios in mass media, as they distort reality or distract the public from it.
To reduce the audience’s vulnerability to manipulation from certain political forces and unprofessional journalists.
To stimulate balanced decisions of average Ukrainians concerning the elections, especially in Eastern region of the country.
